Women's Wisdom 2005
Through the ages, women have played a crucial role in agriculture and its development. They were involved in all aspects of agriculture from sowing, nurturing and protecting crops from pests, harvesting, selecting and preserving seeds for the next crop, soil enrichment and so on. Women’s knowledge even went far beyond farming, into the interrelated areas of food, clothing, medicine and health care. They created a rich and holistic culture itself, which blended well with the local ecology. This publication brings together the results of a participatory pilot study of women’s knowledge in sustainable agriculture in collaboration with PAN Asia Pacific’s network partners in Indonesia, Philippines and Pakistan. These three pilot studies are presented here to begin this essential and crucial documentation; to ensure that women’s knowledge and skills in agriculture are made visible.
