The Diversity Of Traditional Rice Varieties In India - A Focus On Tamil Nadu
The rich biodiversity of traditional rice varieties in India, the richest among all the countries in the world, is under serious threat. Thousands of local rice varieties have disappeared because of the proliferation of modern ones like the so-called high yielding varieties(HYVs) and hybrids. But over the last decade, the genetic instability of the acquired traits in modern rice varieties and the associated environmental degradation have caused a continuous decline in yields and quality of food grains, causing a rice crisis in India and many Asian countries. In this article published by PAN Asia Pacific (PANAP), learn about some of the traditional rice varieties that are still existing in India, their importance, and how farmers are struggling to preserve its biodiversity.
